Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
