At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

Regional Security Context

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.

Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
